Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that people who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals buying these medications should be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a return to starting weight within about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Users who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a switch flipping and you're instantly starving," said a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Interest

Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is more common among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
