A minimum of 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the head of state.

The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose term concluded the year before. This project was closely associated with his administration's strategic vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its role in public projects. They were completed at an accelerated speed, surpassing predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised persistent concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party called for an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This halt was suggested while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."

In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and management of these strategic projects.
